Recipe Card Sizes: 3x5 vs 4x6 — Which Should You Use?

A practical guide to standard recipe card dimensions for printing, binders, and storage boxes.

Standard Recipe Card Sizes

There are two standard sizes for printed recipe cards: 3x5 inches and 4x6 inches. The size you choose affects how much content fits on each card, what kind of binder or box you need for storage, and how the cards look when displayed.

3x5 Inch Recipe Cards

3x5 cards are the traditional size — the same dimensions as standard index cards. They fit in most recipe boxes and small binders. Best for: short recipes, ingredient lists, and quick-reference cards. The trade-off is limited space: you'll need concise instructions.

4x6 Inch Recipe Cards

4x6 cards offer significantly more space — about 60% more writing area than 3x5. They're the preferred choice for detailed recipes with multiple steps, ingredient lists, and notes. Our recipe card maker optimizes layout for 4x6 cards by default.

Printable PDF Size

When you download a recipe card as PDF from our tool, it's formatted to print cleanly on standard US letter or A4 paper with crop marks for cutting to size. We recommend 4x6 as the default because it accommodates both the ingredient list and step-by-step instructions without crowding.
